What happens to email during a transfer to Go Daddy?

Hi,

I currently have a business website that was created using the old Mr Site website builder. That builder is effectively redundant now and I need to create a new website. The organisation that now hosts my website is called Tsohost and they also provide the email services that go with my website.

I'm interested in creating a new website using Go Daddy and I understand most of the domain transfer process but I need to know what happens to emails during a domain transfer. I'm self-employed and my business effectively runs by email so I cannot have any email downtime at all.

I'm guessing that if I sever all ties with Tsohost I need to transfer the domain to Go Daddy and change the name servers to Go Daddy's as well - correct? Will there be any downtime while this happens?

I was thinking that one way to do this would be to:

  1. Create a new Go Daddy website
  2. Transfer the domain after the new website is complete (but obviously not live)
  3. Accept that I'd be using Go Daddy's name servers with the new website

If I do it this way, would the old (Tsohost) name servers apply during the domain transfer and then the Go Daddy servers come into play on the day the transfer happens?

Any help will be gratefully appreciated!

Many thanks

D

When you transfer the domain the name servers stay as is - what I would recommend doing is

1) Build out and configure your new site

2) Set Up "Hosted DNS" with GoDaddy where you replicate the zone file in GoDaddy and then point the DNS to GoDaddy

3) Adjust any DNS settings to point to new website / new email server

4) Transfer domain registration

This will ensure you have limited to no downtime as the settings will be mirrored and then in your control within GoDaddy while the domain is being transferred

Thanks for the reply! I think I follow what you're saying but bear with me - I'm an engineer but not an IT or web specialist.

Re: your points (2) and (3) in your reply - how do I set up the "Hosted DNS"? Do I do that directly with Go Daddy?

Many thanks
